Service Line Inventory

Get the Lead Out!

The water leaving Caernarvon Township Authority Well sites is always free of lead. However, lead can contaminate drinking water as it travels through lead-containing plumbing components, including water service lines (the pipes connecting homes to water mains), household fixtures and interior plumbing. These components are often owned by property owners and can introduce lead into the water supply.

In line with the latest regulations, CTA is fully committed to ensuring your water remains safe. As required by Federal and State guidelines, CTA actively identifies, tracks, and notifies residents about any potential risks from these lines, and provides regular water quality updates to keep you informed.

Understanding Lead in Your Service Line and Your Health

Lead can leach into drinking water through corroded lead service lines or household plumbing fixtures.

Exposure to lead in drinking water can have serious health impacts for people of all ages.

  • Infants and Children: Lead can reduce IQ, shorten attention spans, and contribute to learning and behavior challenges or worsen existing issues.
  • Expectant Mothers: Lead exposure before or during pregnancy may also increase the risk of these health effects for their children.
  • Adults: Lead exposure is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and problems with kidney or nervous system function.

What You Can Do...

Run Cold Water: Run the water for 15-30 seconds before using and use cold water for cooking and drinking to reduce your exposure to lead in the water.

Avoid using hot tap water to prepare baby formula, as it may contain higher levels of lead. Do not boil water to remove lead—boiling does not reduce lead content.

Replace Lead Pipes: Replace any plumbing fixtures in your home that may contain lead. Brass faucets, fittings, and valves—especially those installed before 2014 and marketed as "lead-free." Prior to 2014, regulations allowed fixtures with up to 8% lead to be labeled as "lead-free."

Use Water Filters: Certified filters can reduce lead in your drinking water and be sure to replace cartridges on a routine frequency.
